FROM BLACK TO WHITE

For those of you that have known me all of my life I was known as the black haired Spencer girl. When I was growing up my hair was "jet" black. My hair was long and down to my waist and I did not have it cut until I finished the 5th grade because my teacher, Miss Yadon, asked me not to.  I was complaining of headaches and they thought it might be because of my long hair so it was cut. I guess the black hair gene comes from my father. My mothers hair was dark also but it was my dad that turned grey at a very early age. I do not remember my dad anything but grey. My brother John's hair was also that jet black color so much so that they called him Blackie at Central High School. June and Jim also had very black hair. I will have to say that for the first probably 15 years of my life my biggest compliment was about my hair.

I have told you before that James said the first time he noticed me was a girl with long black hair in a yellow dress singing in the choir at church. When I was about 14 years old I begin to find a strand or two of grey in my hair.

That continued until I was about 28 when I started coloring my hair to cover the grey. For the last 47 years (except for a couple of years) I have either colored my hair myself or had it done at the beauty shop.  I have always stayed within the dark brown to light brown color never venturing into red or blonde.

When I was about 44 I decided to let my hair turn grey. When James and I celebrated our 25th Wedding Anniversary my hair was grey. My hair was thick and the grey was a beautiful color but soon people began to ask me if I was James's mother or my kids grandmother. That hurt very much and soon I could take it no more and went back to the color. Also James had never liked it grey.

But the time has come. I am gradually letting my hair color grow off and back to being grey. I know it will be a hard thing to do.  My youngest sister Mary is already letting hers turn. So I will be right there with June, Phyllis, Bill, Mary and Ron. My dad's hair was a grey color and so is Junes and Ron's. Phyllis and Bill have more of a white. Not sure what Mary's final color will be but she seems to be going more toward the grey. Mine was grey before but could be white this time. We will see.
